SUMMARY:ERS Panel discussion on weaning from mechanical ventilation: lesson
 s learned from WEAN SAFE
DESCRIPTION:5 December\, 2023 | Online\n\n18:00–19:00 CET\n\nChairs: Pro
 f. Dr. Leo Heunks (Amsterdam\, Netherlands)\nSpeakers: Prof. John Laffey
 (Galway\, Ireland)\, Prof. Laurent Brochard (Toronto (ON)\, Canada)\, Dr.
Margaret Herridge (Toronto (ON)\, Canada)\, Dr. Giacomo Bellani (Trento\,
Italy)\n\nWeaning from mechanical ventilation represents a crucial step in
the recovery process following endotracheal intubation in patients with a
cute respiratory failure. Delayed weaning from mechanical ventilation is a
ssociated with adverse clinical outcome\, increases the risk of dying and
increases length of stay in the intensive care unit. Weaning duration affe
cts health care resource use\, whether direct financial costs or the oppor
tunity for other patients of consumption of finite critical care capacity.
\n\nWEAN SAFE is an international collaboration among 50 countries and 500
ICU’s around the globe to investigate the epidemiology\, practice and o
utcome of weaning from mechanical ventilation.\n\nWEAN SAFE is an ERS co-f
unded clinical research collaboration and the first results of this collab
oration investigating almost 6000 patients have been published very recent
ly (Pham et al\, Lancet RM\, 2023). These results are highly relevant from
clinical\, scientific and patient perspective. A webinar would be an idea
l format to discuss the findings and implications of the first WEAN SAFE r
esults.\nEducational aims\n\n To define weaning from invasive mechanical
ventilation in endotracheally intubated and tracheostomized patients.\n T
o provide an overview of the outcome of patients weaning from invasive mec
hanical ventilation.\n To provide an overview of modifiable and non-modif
iable factors affecting weaning outcome\n To discuss variations in weanin
g practices\n\nTopics\n\n WEAN SAFE: a brief introduction to a long journ
ey – Giacomo Bellani\n Why is it important to reduce duration of mecha
nical ventilation – Margaret Herridge\n Highlights from WEAN SAFE –
John Laffey\n Panel discussion: Challenges in ventilator weaning – L
 aurent Brochard\, Giacomo Bellani\, Margaret Herridge\, John Laffey\n\nTar
 get audience:\n\n Pulmonologists\n Intensivists\n Residents/fellows\n
Nurses\n Allied health care professionals\n Clinical scientists\n Physi
ologists\n Students\n\nFormat\n\n The webinar will start with an introdu
ction lecture and an introductory lecture on weaning from mechanical venti
lation.\n Thereafter a panel discussion will follow to discuss novel insi
ghts from WEAN SAFE (with MCQ/opinion from participants)\n During/after t
he panel discussion\, there will be a patient perspective.\n\nLearning out
comes\nAfter following this webinar\, participants should be able to:\n\n
Define the weaning process and list criteria to initiate weaning from mec
hanical ventilation\n Evaluate the epidemiology of weaning\n Understand
factors that can be modified to optimize weaning outcome.\n
