ERS announces significant development of fellowship programmes for 2025

The European Respiratory Society (ERS) has improved its fellowship programmes for 2025 with the aim to foster impactful research and support emerging talent in respiratory health worldwide.

LTRF expands to 24 months to strengthen research impact

The LTRF programme has now been a cornerstone of ERS’s support for respiratory research for more than 20 years. Suspended during the COVID pandemic, it returned in 2024. In 2025, building on the lessons of RESPIRE, the duration of LTRF fellowships will now extend from a maximum duration of 12 to 24 months. This improvement should allow fellowship recipients to delve deeper into their research, yielding outcomes with greater scientific and clinical significance.

The LTRF programme is open to researchers of all nationalities, with no limitation on the location of an applicant’s host institution. The LTRF programme reflects ERS’s ongoing dedication to advancing respiratory science and improving respiratory health. The first call for applications will open on 30 May, 2025, with a deadline of 30 July, 2025.

STRF and CTF return to pre-pandemic schedules

In addition to its updates to the LTRF programme, ERS will restore its Short-Term Research Fellowship (STRF) and Clinical Training Fellowship (CTF) programmes to their pre-pandemic schedules of two calls per year. This change aims to offer increased flexibility for researchers and clinicians seeking to undertake targeted projects or advanced training.

ERS celebrates the success of RESPIRE

Finally, ERS is celebrating the success of the RESPIRE programme and its fellows, who have left an enduring mark on respiratory science. The Society is grateful to the European Union and the MSCA programme for co-funding the initiative and contributing significantly to its success. By promoting innovation, international collaboration and professional development, RESPIRE set a lasting standard for excellence in research funding.
